Diabetes Diet Plan: A Practical Guide with Gulf Foods
A practical diabetes diet plan with Gulf foods: the plate method, how many dates, how much rice, majlis coffee and sweets, low-salt tips and a sample day.

A diabetes diet plan doesn't mean giving up dates or rice. It means measured carb portions at regular meals: half your plate vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter starch. With high blood pressure, also keep salt under 5 g a day and follow DASH principles. Here is how to apply it to Gulf and Omani food.
Why this matters in Oman and the Gulf
Oman's national STEPS survey (2017) found diabetes in 15.7% of Omani adults; about 17% of those cases were newly diagnosed during the survey. Another 11.8% had prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose). Key risk factors included raised blood pressure, family history and a larger waist. Your daily plate is a powerful tool: it supports your doctor's treatment plan, it doesn't replace it.
The plate method: the simplest diabetes diet
The American Diabetes Association and the CDC recommend the Diabetes Plate: no scale, no maths. Use a 9-inch (23 cm) plate:
- Half: non-starchy vegetables such as salad greens, cucumber, tomato, okra, courgette and molokhia.
- A quarter: lean protein such as grilled kingfish, hammour or sardines, skinless chicken, eggs or lentils.
- A quarter: carbs such as rice, whole-wheat bread, potato, fruit or laban.
- Drink: water, or unsweetened tea and coffee.
Mayo Clinic adds: eat fish at least twice a week (grilled, not fried) and keep regular mealtimes, which helps your body use insulin better.
How many carb servings do you need?
Carbs raise blood sugar most. Per the CDC, one carb serving is about 15 g, and eating similar amounts at each meal keeps readings steadier. Your doctor or dietitian sets your personal number. Roughly one serving each, from the CDC carb lists:
- 1/3 cup cooked rice.
- Half a 6-inch (15 cm) khubz.
- One medium orange or small apple.
- 17 small grapes or 1 cup diced melon.
- 1 cup milk (about 12 g).
- Two to three medium dates (an estimate by size).
Pairing carbs with protein, such as a few nuts or low-fat dairy, can help prevent spikes, the CDC notes.
Dates and rice: how to eat them wisely
Dates
A 2011 UAE study found five common varieties (including Khalas, Fard and Lulu) had a low glycemic index in people with type 2 diabetes, roughly 44 to 53, without large post-meal spikes. But dates are calorie-dense (about 314 kcal per 100 g), and 50 g of carbs equalled about 7 to 10 dates, so one date carries roughly 5 to 7 g.
- Have two or three per sitting and count them within your carbs.
- Pair them with a few almonds or a cup of laban.
- Skip stuffed or syrup- and chocolate-coated dates.
Rice (aish)
Refined grains like white rice lose most of their fibre; whole grains raise blood sugar more slowly (CDC).
- Keep rice to a quarter of the plate, about 2/3 cup cooked (two servings), or as your plan says.
- With machboos or biryani, fill up on salad and vegetables first.
- Try brown rice, or mix rice with lentils.
Arabic coffee and sweets in the majlis
You don't need to avoid the majlis. In a small Saudi study of 10 healthy adults, the glycemic index of dates rose from 55 with water to 63 with Arabic coffee; not statistically significant, but a reminder that quantity matters. Take coffee unsweetened, two dates and a few nuts.
Halwa, luqaimat and kunafa are high in sugar and fat: take a small piece, count it in your carbs, and not at every gathering. If cravings are your biggest hurdle, Badnii's 30-day sugar reset program helps you cut sugar and cravings gradually with an expert guiding you.
Simple Gulf swaps
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| White khubz or regag | Whole-wheat bread ("whole wheat flour" listed first) |
| Sweetened or flavoured laban | Plain, low-fat laban |
| Juice, even "natural" | Whole fruit, which keeps its fibre |
| Sugary karak with condensed milk | Tea with regular milk, sugar cut step by step |
| Fried sambosa | Oven-baked or grilled versions |
A diet plan for diabetes and high blood pressure
People with diabetes are more likely to have high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease is their leading cause of death, says the American Diabetes Association. The target for most is below 130/80 mmHg, and the ADA recommends DASH-based eating.
The DASH plan emphasises vegetables, fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy, fish, poultry, beans, nuts and vegetable oils, and limits saturated fat, sugary drinks and sweets. It sets sodium at 2,300 mg a day; 1,500 mg lowers blood pressure further. The WHO recommends under 5 g of salt daily (just under a teaspoon); the global average was about 11 g in 2021. Watch for hidden salt in:
- Salted dried fish (awal, maleh), pickles and salty cheese.
- Stock cubes and ready spice mixes.
- Packaged bread, crisps and fast food.
Flavour with loomi, lemon, garlic and cumin instead. Managing both conditions? Badnii's heart health nutrition program builds a plan that balances blood sugar and lower salt for your condition.
Sample diabetes meal plan: one Gulf day
An illustration, not a prescription; portions depend on your weight, medication and activity.
| Meal | What to eat | Approx. carbs |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Two boiled eggs or a vegetable omelette, half a whole-wheat khubz, cucumber and tomato, unsweetened tea | 1 serving |
| Snack | One medium orange and a few almonds | 1 serving |
| Lunch | Half plate salad and cooked okra, grilled kingfish, 2/3 cup rice (brown preferred), a cup of low-fat laban | About 3 |
| Afternoon majlis | Unsweetened Arabic coffee, two dates, a few walnuts | About 1 |
| Dinner | A cup of lentil soup, green salad, half a whole-wheat khubz | About 2 |
With high blood pressure, cook with minimal salt and skip salty cheese and pickles.
Diabetes meal plan in Ramadan
The IDF-DAR guidelines note that many people with diabetes are exempt from fasting; the decision needs a pre-Ramadan risk assessment and medication review with your doctor. If your doctor agrees:
- Break the fast with water and one or two dates, then use the plate method.
- Make luqaimat and sambosa an exception, not a daily habit.
- Have a balanced suhoor and drink water between iftar and suhoor.
- Agree in advance when to break the fast, e.g. if sugar drops below 70 mg/dL.
How to read a food label
From the American Diabetes Association:
- Start with the serving size; every number depends on it.
- Check total carbohydrate, not just sugar, and watch added sugars.
- "Low sodium" means 140 mg or less per serving; "high fibre" means 5 g or more.
- "Sugar free" isn't carb-free; don't rely on "net carbs" claims.
Common mistakes
- Skipping meals, then overeating later.
- Choosing juice over fruit because it's "natural".
- Banning dates, then overdoing them at occasions.
- Watching sugar, forgetting salt.
- Adjusting medication yourself; that's your doctor's call.
When to see a doctor
- Readings are repeatedly above your targets.
- Sugar drops below 70 mg/dL, or you feel confused or faint; the CDC says this needs immediate action.
- Blood pressure stays above 130/80.
- Before a new diet if you take insulin or glucose-lowering tablets, and before Ramadan.
Knowing is easy; sticking with it is hard

FAQ
What is the best diet for people with diabetes?
No single diet fits everyone, but the plate method is a practical start: half vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbs. Keep carbs similar at each meal and let your doctor or dietitian set your servings.
How many dates can a person with diabetes eat per day?
Usually two to three per sitting, roughly one carb serving. Common varieties have a low glycemic index, but quantity still matters most; pair them with nuts or laban.
Can people with diabetes eat rice?
Yes, a quarter of the plate, usually about 2/3 cup cooked. Prefer brown rice or mix in lentils, and start with salad.
What diet suits diabetes and high blood pressure together?
The plate method plus DASH principles, with under 5 g of salt a day. Watch salted fish, pickles and stock cubes.
Can people with diabetes fast in Ramadan?
It depends on your condition and treatment. IDF-DAR guidelines call for a medical assessment before Ramadan, so decide with your doctor.
